Why Your Fruit Isn’t Sizing Like It Should

And It’s Probably Not What You Think

Here’s something we hear a lot this time of year:

“We’ve been pushing potassium — why isn’t the fruit sizing?”

It’s a fair question, and potassium absolutely plays a role. But in our experience walking fields, when size stalls out, potassium is rarely the missing piece.

Usually, the plant has plenty of it.

The problem is that it can’t do much with it.

Let’s explain.

Fruit Size Comes Down to Three Things

1. Water Moving Into the Fruit (Cell Expansion)

Fruit gets bigger because cells expand — and that’s driven by water movement.

Potassium helps regulate that process, but only if the plant is actually moving water efficiently in the first place. If it’s under stress or running on low energy, potassium just sits there.

2. Calcium Holding It Together (Cell Wall Strength)

As those cells swell up, they need structure. That’s calcium’s job.

When there isn’t enough available calcium moving with the growth, cells stretch thin, fruit goes soft, and you start seeing splits and breakdown at harvest.

We see this constantly in programs that look good on paper. The calcium is there — it’s just not moving.

3. Energy to Make It All Work (ATP)

This is the one most nutrition programs don’t even think about.

Sizing fruit takes real energy. When the plant’s energy status is low, nutrient uptake slows down, water movement gets sluggish, and growth stalls — even when you’ve got a full tank of nutrients.

You can have everything in the soil and the plant still won’t use it.

What We Usually Find When Sizing Plateaus

When we dig into a fruit-sizing issue, we commonly see:

  • Potassium is high, but not balanced
  • Calcium is present but tied up and not mobile
  • Salt loads are higher than they need to be, slowing nutrient uptake
  • Nobody is thinking about plant energy

The result is usually the same:

Nutrients are in the system, fruit isn’t responding, and quality problems show up at the end of the season.

What’s Actually Working in the Field Right Now

The growers we’re talking to who are happy with their fruit this season are doing a few things differently:

  • Keeping potassium in range instead of constantly pushing it
  • Getting calcium into forms that actually move during the expansion window
  • Reducing salt load so the plant can take up nutrients more efficiently
  • Supporting plant energy production to drive uptake and growth

When all of those pieces come together, fruit continues sizing longer, uniformity improves across the block, and firmness and finish are there at harvest.

One Question Worth Asking About Your Program

Is your program simply supplying nutrients—or is it helping the plant use them?

There’s a real difference between the two.

And that gap is often where the biggest opportunity lives.

Want a Second Opinion?

If your fruit sizing isn’t where you’d like it to be right now, we’re happy to take a look at your program.

No pitch. No pressure.

Just an honest conversation about what you’re seeing in the field and whether there’s something worth adjusting.

We’re in the field most days and always glad to talk through what’s happening in your operation.
